The unintended expatriate blogger behind Prairie Dawn Work

Hi, I'm Emma
Project manager. Parent. An expatriate residing in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
A few years back I moved here with my family. What began as a temporary assignment gradually became a new chapter of life overseas.
How It Started
Moving to Netherlands wasn’t in the plan for the long term. Like many expat relocations, it started as a job opportunity and quickly grew into something far more significant.
The first months were demanding — new systems, new routines, new expectations. Everyday tasks felt tougher than they needed to be.
The Adjustment Period
There was culture shock, uncertainty, and a lot of learning by doing. But gradually, routines took shape. We found places that suited us, connected with other families, and began building something that felt stable.
Why I Built Prairie Dawn Work
Most online information was either corporate-level relocation advice or surface-level tourism content. What was missing was an honest, everyday family viewpoint.
This site exists to bridge that gap — practical guidance drawn from real life in Netherlands.
What This Site Is About (And What It Isn’t)
This site IS:
- Hands-on experience from living in Netherlands
- Centered on family life and day-to-day realities
- Updated whenever there is a meaningful change
This site ISN'T:
- not a tourism board resource
- a paid-review platform
- a standard travel blog
Looking Ahead
Our stay in Netherlands continues, and so does the learning journey. As long as the information remains helpful, I’ll keep documenting what we discover.
If you have questions about family life in Amsterdam or anywhere in Netherlands, don't hesitate to contact me.
Best regards,
Emma
